Article: A New Catholic Heresy

This article from American Thinker hits home, me being from Illinois and all. (Actually, from Southern Illinois, which is vastly different from Illinois in general.) I have long remarked in conversation that Illinois is actually governed by Chicago politics and Springfield and everything north of there is just a suburb of Chicago. We in Downstate Illinois are what I liked to call "the inhabited rural area" and really are of no consequence. After all, it was Chicago who gave us Barrack Obama and Obamacare...need I say more?

At any rate, the article is well written and hits the nail on the head - If you are a Democrat, you can't be a Catholic also because the two are diametrically opposed. You have to choose one or the have to choose between God or Man. God doesn't like fence-sitters.

A New Catholic Heresy

On August 13, 2013 the Guardian reported that astronomers had witnessed the birth of a new star. "Images of the birth of a star around 1,400 light years away from Earth is captured by scientists at the European Southern Observatory, (in) Chile." This is a rare event to document, but one that astronomers suspected has occurred often in the universe.
With the passage of same-sex marriage in Illinois, political scientists and theologians are also getting a chance to see another birth, one that is more down to earth. They can witness the emergence of a new heresy in the U.S. Catholic Church. Those professed Illinois Catholic politicians who advanced same-sex marriage in Illinois can now be seen as Babylonian Heretics.
Why would the birth of a heresy be of interest to others besides religious historians? One reason would be that the Babylonian Heresy helps explain the schizophrenic phenomenon of Catholic Democrats in Illinois. How is it one can believe in both Obama and the Trinity?
Julian Guthrie tries unsuccessfully to explain this split personality of Catholic voters in her article, "How Progressive Democrats Remain Catholic."
She answers her own question by writing, "...when I look at prominent Catholic politicians with liberal social agendas and wonder how they attend Mass on Sunday and legislate something very different on Monday, I have my answer... Catholicism, a club with magisterial rituals, good deeds, arcane teachings and more than 1 billion adherents, is far from monolithic."
She continues, "The house rules that apply are those set by believers themselves. These are the everyday Catholics who may honor their pope but disagree with papal positions...The Catholics who fill the nation's pews share something with the politicians at the podium: they believe that resistance and reverence can go together like bread and wine."
Guthrie's veiled reference to transubstantiation is not enough to explain the faith many Catholics have in the Democratic Party. To say that resistance and reverence go together is a gentle lie, a lie that relies more on a turn of phrase than a return to truth. The truth is that theology and revelation trump house rules.
The issue of being Catholic and Democrat is more serious than Guthrie imagines. "David Carlin, a veteran sociologist, philosophy professor, and author of 'The Decline and Fall of the Catholic Church in America,' shows that his party and his religion have now taken opposite sides in the Culture War."
"Carlin's arguments challenge all religious voters to ask themselves the same question, 'Can a Catholic Be a Democrat?' Then he asks, 'How (did) the party I loved became the enemy of my religion.' Carlin claims that on issues of human life, sex, faith, morality, suffering... the modern, secularist Democratic Party has become the enemy of Catholicism; indeed, of all traditional religions."
From Carlin's perspective, Guthrie's solution to the dilemma of being both an everyday Catholic and a Democrat, is what passes for theology in California. It is the incense smoke that hides the reality of heresy. The truthful answer, the answer that blows away the smoke is a simple answer. The truth is, progressive or Democratic Catholics are heretics.
Like the birth of a far-off star, heretics in Illinois, with the passage of same-sex marriage, can now be clearly seen and given a name. What we now see in Illinois is the heresy of our age, the Babylonian Heresy.
Among other political positions, the Babylonian Heretics seek to further amnesty for illegal aliens, state-run health care, and abortion on demand. A theological error inherent in all these positions is that they turn to the state to solve problems that charity should solve, charity that begins with the individual.
The Babylonian Heresy skips over the Catholic moral principle of subsidiarity in favor of state idolatry. It is state idolatry that makes professional politicians like Gov. Pat Quinn and State Rep. Marty Moylan confuse everyday Catholics in Illinois. To use an old metaphor, because of the Babylonian Heresy, the poison of Marxism has been made sweet in Illinois.
Did Gov. Quinn and Rep. Moylan drink the polluted waters? We know Gov. Quinn and Rep. Moylan are professed Catholics. We know they had ample time and a modicum of intelligence to investigate the issue of same-sex marriage and to understand the Catholic Churches' teaching on it.
In spite of this, both men moved to further confusion and follow the teachings of the Democratic Party. Perhaps they are simply cynical politicians who are best described by Gibbon in his long history of the Roman Empire. They believe all religions are useful. They claim to be Catholic because it is useful to get the votes of Catholics.
If being cynical is not enough explanation for their behavior, then, perhaps Quinn and Moylan are like officials in the Roman Empire under Constantius or Valens. These emperors were in favor of Arianism, a heresy that almost won outagainst the Catholic faith.
Today, as in times past, the men who are supposed to be leaders of their community have led their community astray. It is uncertain how far the Babylonian Heresy extends among Catholics in Illinois. Because so few have called for the excommunication of Quinn and Moylan, the heresy is probably wide spread among Catholic Democrats and clergy in the Chicago area.
Why would other Catholics in Illinois, the ones Guthrie calls everyday Catholics, the ones who are not politicians, why would they prefer the Babylonian Heresy to Catholic orthodoxy? The answer is simpler. Life is easier for them as heretics.
The fabric of their life has the warp of Catholicism and the weave of the Democratic Party. It's been that way as long as they can remember. To point out heretical ideas is to show a tear in the fabric of life. To realize that Gov. Quinn and Rep, Moylan are either invincibly ignorant or are supporting a structure of evil is unsettling for many Catholics. It's best to just go along to get along.
Besides, certain ideas dominate a personality, no matter the era in which we live. Rush Limbaugh, who is reported not to be a Catholic but a Methodist,understands the Babylonian Heresy, if not in so many words. Limbaugh says that nowadays, "The liberal is a liberal first, and he's a Catholic second."
In short, the Babylonian Heresy is an easy faith where the Democratic Party will manage charity and grace. In the words of St. Paul, many prefer to wear the silk of the world instead of the armor of light.
Like the shepherds at Bethlehem 2000 years ago, in 2013 we have seen the birth of a far-off star. Furthermore, like St. Athanasius who witnessed Arianism in Alexandria, we have seen at home in Illinois the growth of the Babylonian Heresy. The closer we look, the more auspicious are the days.

A Conversation...

“Why are you here, Dear One?”

She sat there, eyes downcast, the beginning of tears moistening the eyes that looked out from an ashen face.

“Why are you here?”  He prodded gently.  The words felt soft and warm as a summer sun and she was grateful for the soothing of her aching heart.
She had to look up this time. His face was soft, compassionate and full of something...but what? No. The was the eyes that held her gaze…

“Are you hurting?”  It was more felt, than spoken...

“Yes”, she whispered.


“I am confused.”

“About what?”

“Mom and Dad.”

“Oh”, was all He replied. And He waited for that which He already knew…

“Mom divorced Dad, you know…”

“Yes, I know…”

“And Mom got her annulment…”

“I know that too” he replied with a heavy sigh...Was there also pain, she thought? She shook her head ever so slightly to dismiss the thought.

“Dad says he still Loves her, though…”

“Be assured, Dear One...He does”, came the soft reply.

“How?!” “Why?!” She tersely blurted and immediately wished she hadn't.

“How can he still Love her after breaking her heart so and Why didn't he tell her if he loved her?” she repeated, a little more respectfully this time.

She waited for His reply. When none was forthcoming , she turned her head slightly to glance up…

He was just staring at her, with eyes that pierced to her very Soul, it seemed.

“Do you not know, Dear One? Have you learned nothing of My Love?”

“What do you mean?!” Again, the terse reply and again the regret...and His sorrowful, quiet sigh. When He spoke, it was quite stern and it took her by surprise.

“Did he ever abuse her? “


“Did he ever belittle her?”


“Did he ever threaten her?”


“Did he ever wish her dead?”


“Did he ever mistreat her in public?”


“I don’t understand, then, can you say he does not love your Mother? It appears  to me he loved - loves - her very much.”

“But he hardly ever kissed her! Hardly held her hand! Hardly talked to her! How can someone - anyone - not do those things and say they still love someone?”

He waited before answering, as if to give her time to try and clear a mind that was grappling with so much doubt. He knew she was at a crossroad.

“I was kissed and betrayed by one of my Dearest Friends. My hands were held together by ropes and chains. When I was spoken to, it was with curses and jeers. And yet, I still loved.”

When she offered no response, He continued...

“And when the man I chose to lead my Church denied me three times, did that mean that he failed to Love me? That he failed to honor the vocation I had given him? That he failed in his duty to Me, whom he vowed to Love, Honor and Obey? I had every right to turn from him, he had hurt me so...but I did not. And do you know why?”

“Because you are God.?”  It was a question as much as a statement. Again, the silence. Again, the needed look up at Him. Again, the piercing gaze.

“No, My Child. It was not because I was God.”

“Why, then?” she sighed...

“Because despite his faults, his weaknesses, his cursing and his selfishness, Peter had remorse and sorrow for His wrongs. And beneath that remorse and sorrow was rooted the Love which kept him forever Faithful to Me, to my Church, to His Mother. Peter was forgiven much because he Loved much. It is so with your Dad.”

“And you know this how? Oh, yes. You are God...I forgot.” She pained at her rashness and squeezed her eyes shut - hard.

He smiled - did she hear a chuckle? - before He answered.

“No. It is because I see him here, now, with me.”

Quickly she turned, scanning the pews and peering intensely at the shadows around the darkened chapel. “Where is he?” she asked more reverently than ever before.

“You can’t see him, My Child...but he is here. He is always here... alone, sadly. Bruised and sometimes bloodied...standing silently at the Foot of My Cross. You yourself have seen him many times there, though it is clear you failed to take notice.”

It hurt, those words. Though she did not know why: You have seen him many times…

“What do you mean?” she asked, barely above a whisper.

“Whenever anyone disavowed him, whenever anyone failed to forgive him, whenever anyone marginalized and mistrusted him, whenever anyone failed to show proper respect, whenever anyone derided his efforts at reconciliation, whenever anyone failed to heed his request for talking, whenever he committed human error...need I continue?”

She just sat there…

Finally, a small, heavy sigh escaped from the depths of her Soul.

“Oh”...was all she could muster as she wiped the beginnings of new tears from her face.

He waited a bit more, before continuing...

“True Marital Love, My Child, is not produced by external actions alone...The Love your Dad has was formed deep within the Soul where it took root and never died and where it continues to be fortified by the Graces within the Sacrament. Those Graces are still present despite the divorce and annulment. And despite his mistakes, selfishness and weaknesses, he still Loves...”

He waited and then gave a heavy sigh when she had nothing more to offer. She distinctly heard His groan, this time.

“He gets tired of being strong for you - for all his children. He gets so weary, he almost gives up.”

That startled her. “What?” she said.

“He gets tired of being strong for you. He sometimes wants to quit. Even now, at this very moment, he wants to quit.”

“Why doesn't he, then?” she whispered, though she already knew the answer.

“Because he is a Father, and a Father does not quit. It goes with the vocation.”

He waited a bit...waited for her to acknowledge what He knew was coming.

“He really does Love us all then, including Mom” she said matter-of-factly.  She turned and looked up at him. “Doesn't he?”

“Oh, very much so, Dear One. Very much so...and he misses you all terribly. He misses your Mother most of all and though that is now out of his hands, yet his Love for her continues.  He deeply regrets the mistakes both parents made and what all this has done, especially to you children, but he doesn't know what else to do to make you all understand. So... he has stopped trying.”

She was silent for long while and thought she heard Him groan again.

“I...we've... been wrong.”


“We have to tell him.”



“Just tell him.

“What if he doesn't care anymore?”

“He does, though he is hurting very much inside. Your telling him what you need to will help that greatly. He waits for you...he will always wait for you. Just like I waited for you.”

She looked up and smiled at him, her Heart finally relieved of its burden.

“Forever?” she asked, plaintively.

“Yes, My Child...Forever. Both of us, always forever.”

"In Every Dictatorship The Past is Censured" -- From the Life of a Diocesan Priest Who Discovered the Immemorial Mass of All Ages

(Milan) Don Alberto Secci, born in 1963, ordained in 1988, is a priest of the Diocese of Novara on the border with Switzerland. Don Secci became famous when he announced with two other diocesan priests, that he was bringing the traditional form of the Roman Rite back according to the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum of Pope Benedict XVI.. The result was great resistance from the diocesan leadership, the rest of the clergy and public hostility. Today he may celebrate the Old Rite and proclaim the undiminished faith - in a tiny mountain village with a few hundred inhabitants. In an interview, he talks about the crisis in the Church and the importance of tradition.
As the three priests announced their decision according to  Summorum Pontificum,  there was massive resistance in the diocesan leadership and the rest of the clergy of the diocese who immediately stirred up  sedition  of  the parishioners against their pastor. The priests became a national news story. The entire press of Italy reported about them. They were described as "stubborn" and denounced as "agents provocateurs"."We had become a scandal overnight, for the world and the diocese," said Don Secci. The Pope generously granted the Motu Proprio "and for that, the Church can't thank him enough," said the priest. However, Rome was unable to prevail against the selfishness of some bishops who consider their diocese as a private fief. Two Priests are active today in the Southern Alps at Domodossola Verbania and close to the Swiss border, a pastors. To expand its reach, they run the Internet apostolate Radicati nella Fede (Rooted in Faith) and  seek the instruction of the faithful in the Church's teaching of all time in their parish boundaries. In January, the fourth annual "Day of the Tradition" will take place, which Don Secci organizes once a year. The theme for 2014 is: "Winter in the Church after the Second Vatican Council". The topic is taken from the book by Cristina Siccardi (see separate article The Winter of the Church after the Second Vatican Council - The new book to an open question )  who will be present as a speaker.The interview with Don Alberto Secci was conducted by Riscossa Cristiana .
1) It is becoming increasingly apparent, even in relation to the celebration of the Holy Mass (Old Rite and New Rite) that there are two different ways to live the Catholic religion: priests and faithful, are oriented to lessons that are subject to the modern revolution, and other priests and faithful who adhere to the teachings and principles of the Church's tradition. How do you think it will be possible one day to resolve this dichotomy again?
Don Alberto Secci: It is necessary that those who have the grace to recognize this terrible dichotomy, have to choose for God, to live in complete catholicity  according to Catholic tradition. This is the crucial point. In Christianity there is nothing abstract. You said: "also in relation to the celebration of the Holy Mass in the traditional rite".  I'd rather say they remain Catholic, believers hold fast to the teachings and principles of the Church's tradition.. The believers who are  held by the revolution, however, have only a vague Christian inspiration and the only in the best cases. To be precise, you said: "in reference to the Mass."  Allow me to emphasize this "also". Why? Not in the sense, as if there were just the Mass, because the Doctrine of the  Faith is inseparable from the Mass and  connected to the entire apostolate. But it is much more in the sense that the Catholic life is the continuation of grace, which comes above all through the sacraments, and thus is the center of the Holy Mass, indeed a Mass without an ambiguous rite. Therefore, If  someone had the grace to understand the dramatic situation,  he would not trade his   conscience for personal acquiescence. One must look for a traditional Mass site and make this the comprehensive place of education in the faith, in the broadest sense of the word, not just intellectually. Small centers of the normal Catholic life, quite modest and perhaps even quite poor, but largely because of the graces that they convey. This will be the solution, God willing. It is our duty to decide whether we want to tread a path of grace and therefore, tradition by loving the Church in Her suffering. God is the solution to this mystery ailment. But God has already solved everything. We are to lovingly care about the Church and not "politically."

2) The "Day of the Tradition" in Verbania will take place this 19th January 2014 for the fourth time. Can you tell us what will happen and how the initiative was created?
Don Alberto Secci: It is simply a Sunday afternoon, which is entirely devoted to a burning topic of the faith. The day ends with the celebration of a singing show. For years, Don Stefano and I  have endeavored to move forward with a serious study of Christian doctrine for the faithful of our churches. The meetings are  held fortnightly. We place great value on them. The confusion that prevails today among Catholics is so great that we simply can not imagine standing aside, just because we love the tradition. It is necessary to know the Christianity, Church history, the Church teachers and the great spiritual Master. Christianity is so sublime and so beautiful because the whole work of God is unsurpassable and perfect. How could we not feel the desire to get to know it better and better?  I'm worried about those believers who move from one church to another in order to always something "more traditional ", but do not have the desire to be led in doctrine and spirituality. Sooner or later they will adopt a secular mentality again,  one perhaps  sooner than the other. I've met some people who were arrested by the Old Rite, but in their judgments and their behaviors were liberal. However, the truth of the faith must be the measure of our judgment and our actions. In order to give other people from further afield the opportunity to participate in our ministry that takes place for us throughout the year, we launched the "Day of Tradition". It is a day that is dedicated to the Catholic doctrine, specifically a particular topic. It is also an opportunity to meet again, keep in touch, meet new people.
3) Does the life in the countryside as opposed to living in the city facilitate the understanding of the tradition?
Don Alberto Secci: No, today the disaster is global. It is not the mountain or the land itself which will help us, but the way you view the world, that is, whether they are really considered to have Catholic views. If so, whether the mountain or plain, small village or metropolis is the same. On the contrary, if a priest should be really determined to give his life in the grace received from Him, then the city offers even more opportunities for his apostolate. Personally, I must confess that I have always loved the solitude of the mountain, which always holds the same beauty and pain in itself and I have learned more and love more. For me anyway, it is the place where I live as a priest, which obedience to God. First,  the faithful are entrusted to me. I'm not picking any particular place,  that I've never done.
4) Why  precisely are those who want the Creed of the Holy Catholic Church  and are really serious to live it, are the only ones excluded from the discussion and public debate  or kept to religious themes, but but everything else is approved?
Don Alberto Secci: In every dictatorship, the past must be censored. No one must know how it once was before the dictatorship, which always claims to give new life to the world. And the dictatorships of the "liberals" are the worst and have always been the worst. When the schema of a dictatorship enters the Church, the censorship of the past is almost a dogma: "Today the Church has a new consciousness, you can not go back to the things of the past, even if they were sacred, but today they are no longer there, because the Church's consciousness determines the truth in today."  Something like that is thought by almost all today, and that is terrible. It is the fastest way to destroy the Church, as we see. The representatives of this thinking have access to almost all means of communication, because they are useful to "entertain" the people, they do not argue with the New Paganism, they do not startle, do not challenge them when they criticize, then only the Church, most of the time, but they just talk, they palaver and palaver and say this mostly nothing.
But it is enough that a child says  in his innocence, see, the king is naked, and already breaks the spell of censorship that the past is hidden, it  falls into place in a single moment. That's why it will take more work from  the traditional side and less "whining",  to help build the kingdom of God, according to the responsibility that God has entrusted to each of us objectively. There is no time to lose: Do all that stands in your way, so that the Catholic Church and the world is Christian.
5) What today indicts  the Church  of being in crisis?
Don Alberto Secci: The priesthood.  In the "modernized" Christendom, the  priesthood  has no place, because it is without meaning in  the new religion ultimately. That is the terrible consuming of Protestantism in our house, that is, in the Catholicity.
6) What can teach the tradition of the Church teach to  our time?
Don Alberto Secci: Quite simply, Christianity. You must do nothing else. Christianity is not reduced to a purely earthly matter, as does the prevailing flow, but Christianity as God's grace. Christianity, which is not ashamed of the cross and therefore builds upon and aims to  grace. Christianity, which knows that grace is not a construct but is truly effective, and is capable of bringing about a civilization and high culture when man opens to her, as history has never seen. Tradition teaches the visible Church, that Christendom  in order to save many souls brings forth  Christianity, that is, a Christian society: therefore, if the Church of today wants the salvation of souls, then  She should cease to be ashamed of Christianity .
7) What does tradition teach to the pathological modern world, which consists of many broken families, of sick political decisions of cultures and ideologies that are in open contradiction to the law of nature and no longer has  clear goals and fixed points?
Don Alberto Secci: Tradition reminds everyone that one can not pretend that there is no original sin, when talking about the people and society. Man can not save himself, so he can't  build a just society on his own. He needs the grace of Christ and indeed absolutely, without exception. Without grace that comes from God, there is no healthy people. 

Tradition also points out that the Grace of God, the grace that Christ has given to us through the cross and conveyed to us through the Sacraments, can do all things. And if this is so, and that is so, then there is nothing that can prevent sanctity, if man does not reject it himself. Traditionalists are  the kindest, friendliest people because, they are in the  readiest place there is,  because he lives on the primacy of the supernatural life. For where God lives, everything becomes new in  true order.
8) Why should traditional people live better than a "modern" man?
Don Alberto Secci: Because he does not support his life by himself, but depends on God. One must live so that he always looks for the grace of God and  to do this with the joy of everything to His greater glory. The tradition is a way of simplicity, it does not look for luxury or  false comfort: God is everything, and so I live for Him. It is a life, everyone in his state of life, as Saint Benedict says, because the monk is simply a Christian. In the Middle Ages it was quite normal that even princes and princesses went to the monastery when they came of age. This was not an early form of retirement home for rich and powerful who could afford it at that time. No, it was because of their salvation because they knew that this was the most appropriate way to do what they knew to do, namely, to seek the grace of God, having previously lived by their rank and position, performing with their responsibility in the world.
9) In view of the many people who groan under the daily loads that consume their days full of hustle and bustle and work for an ultimately pointless existence as it appears to them, have  questions to which they can find no answer, how would you  describe to them the beauty of life  and also the beauty of death?
Life and death becomes beautiful when  one recognizes one's own place and also lives: you belong to God and the whole of life has its meaning, and the questions suddenly get a clear answer when we recognize this commitment. And in God, in our Lord Jesus Christ, man suddenly realizes with astonishment that all is altogether well. One discovers the profound unity of everything. Life is  will be understood  in an entirely new depth and simplicity, it is wisdom. But that you do not get that without the Church, which of course was specially instituted by Christ with a clear task for It. But the Church is not a social, societal and thus horizontal means such as many others are The Church is the communion with Christ, It is the tradition. It is the tradition, because this bond with the Lord  through the Apostles represents an unbroken line willed by Christ and therefore, the certainty of salvation is mediated through the sacraments. Is there anything more shockingly beautiful  than that? Everything in this bond of grace with Christ, a bond that is historically observable  because it acts in history, finds its place. Nothing is free. If someone wants to live outside this order of God, which alone corresponds to the true nature of things and also of man, therefore following his true, unique development, he will eventually find only suffering and anguish, and finally death, with the real danger that this death is final, terrible and eternal. But God wants us in his own order, he wants to share with us the great beauty, the eternal life, in Him Himself.

Growing up without a father does what?

Another nail in the coffin from the hammer wielded by our errant spouses. It's not rocket science or a needed degree in psychology that most reasonable people - or abandoned spouses - already know and understand this objective reality. 

The Catholic Church is, unfortunately, a subscriber to this reality through the injustice of granting so many specious annulments solely "for the good of the spouse" and not based on any true necessity. One has only to read Robert Vasoli's book What God Has Joined Together: The Annulment Crisis in American Catholicism to understand this. The book is out of print, but available from via this link. Well worth the read...

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre recently conducted a study on the effects of fatherlessness on children, and the results are startling: The absence of a father during critical growth periods leads to impaired social and behavioral abilities in adults and even causes a misshapen prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision-making and moderating social behavior.
Dr. Paul Vitz further shows the adverse effects of fatherlessness, or “defective” fathers, on the social and behavioral skills on prominent atheists in his controversial, updated book, [published by Ignatius Press]Faith of the Fatherless: The Psychology of Atheism. He proves how being disappointed in one’s earthly father, whether through death, absence or mistreatment, often leads to a rejection of God. The crisis of fatherhood in our culture has us in the midst of a 500-year period of adolescence that glorifies aggression and sexual exploitation, according to Vitz.
A biographical survey of influential atheists of the past four centuries – Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins, among many others – shows that this “defective father hypothesis” provides a consistent explanation of the “intense atheism” of these thinkers. A survey of the leading defenders of Christianity over the same period – G.K. Chesterton, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Edmund Burke, among others – confirms the hypothesis, finding few defective fathers. Vitz concludes with an intriguing comparison of male and female atheists and a consideration of other psychological factors that can contribute to atheism.
Throughout Faith of the Fatherless, Vitz does not argue that atheism is psychologically determined. He provides an exposition of the psychological factors predisposing a person to atheism and strongly confirms the essential importance of the role of a good father in a family.
Vitz is a former professor of psychology at New York University and was an atheist until his late 30s.
