The Roman Catholic Church is in a shambles and hemorrhaging daily, and that in seemingly exponential numbers too large to quantify. One has only to look at the headlines from Canon 212, Pewsitter, or Gloria TV to understand the gravity. From homosexuality running rampant in the seminaries to enabling bishops who promote predator priests to complicit Cardinals hiding their own sins of omission to...a Pope who turns a blind eye to everything that is not emotionally self-filling unto himself. Like I said, a shambles.
However bad it may get (and I doubt the worst is over as of this writing...I fear there is still too much yet to be heard from this Titanic-esque iceberg) it remains a truth that the Roman Catholic Church is Indefectible and can never be defeated or die, no matter how badly its earthly governance gets. The strings and life of the Roman Catholic Church are still firmly tied to the fingers of Our Lord, and no movement occurs without his express Will or Permission. That there is an end to this mess is a given; when it will end is not for us to know.
The Catholic Faith as handed down from Our Lord Jesus Christ does not and cannot change. If God Himself destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of rampant homosexuality and mass immoral behaviour, how can such a perverse way of life suddenly find itself all good and holy today? How can two men (or women, for that matter) actively sodomizing one another lead both to Heaven, when the act itself was punished so severely in the Old Testament by God?
Consider what some well known saints have said concerning homosexuality in general and priests in particular:
Saint Peter Damian: "This vice strives to destroy the walls of one’s heavenly motherland and rebuild those of devastated Sodom. Indeed, it violates temperance, kills purity, stifles chastity and annihilates virginity ... with the sword of a most infamous union. It infects, stains and pollutes everything; it leaves nothing pure, there is nothing but filth ...
This vice expels one from the choir of the ecclesiastical host and obliges one to join the energumens and those who work in league with the devil; it separates the soul from God and links it with the demons. This most pestiferous queen of the Sodomites [which is homosexuality] makes those who obey her tyrannical laws repugnant to men and hateful to God ... It humiliates at church, condemns at court, defiles in secret, dishonors in public, gnaws at the person’s conscience like a worm and burns his flesh like fire...
Thus, as soon as someone has fallen into this chasm of extreme perdition, he is exiled from the heavenly motherland, separated from the Body of Christ, confounded by the authority of the whole Church, condemned by the judgment of all the Holy Fathers, despised by men on earth, and reproved by the society of heavenly citizens. He creates for himself an earth of iron and a sky of bronze ... He cannot be happy while he lives nor have hope when he dies, because in life he is obliged to suffer the ignominy of men’s derision and later, the torment of eternal condemnation” (Liber Gomorrhianus, in PL 145, col. 159-178)
Saint Basil of Caesarea: “The cleric or monk who molests youths or boys or is caught kissing or committing some turpitude, let him be whipped in public, deprived of his crown [tonsure] and, after having his head shaved, let his face be covered with spittle; and [let him be] bound in iron chains, condemned to six months in prison, reduced to eating rye bread once a day in the evening three times per week. After these six months living in a separate cell under the custody of a wise elder with great spiritual experience, let him be subjected to prayers, vigils and manual work, always under the guard of two spiritual brothers, without being allowed to have any relationship … with young people.” (St. Basil of Caesarea, in St. Peter Damien, Liber Gomorrhianus, op. cit. cols. 174f.)
Saint Thomas Aquinas: “However, they are called passions of ignominy because they are not worthy of being named, according to that passage in Ephesians (5:12): ‘For the things that are done by them in secret, it is a shame even to speak of.’
For if the sins of the flesh are commonly censurable because they lead man to that which is bestial in him, much more so is the sin against nature, by which man debases himself lower than even his animal nature.” (St. Thomas Aquinas, Super Epistulas Sancti Pauli Ad Romanum I, 26, pp. 27f)
Fr. John Hollowell has a recent post (here) on the homosexuality that he encountered in the seminary and the damage that it caused to some seminarians. While he preserved his vocation, others were not so successful and left the seminary (and who is to know the great and holy deeds these young men might have done for Holy Mother Church, now known but to God). I applaud Father for staying the course, staying true to his vocation and to Our Lord Jesus Christ. It could not have been that easy for him to rise above the permissiveness ensconced in the seminary that he attended.
It is a fact that homosexual behavior has been morally reprehensible from the earliest moments of the Church - and even before its founding by Our Lord Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, homosexuality has now become fashionable, laudable, and acceptable in the Roman Catholic Church, even to the point of Catholic (read: orthodox) priests being castigated by parishioners and/or thrown under the bus by their bishops when they try to uphold Catholic Teaching on the subject. How did we devolve from Sodom and Gomorrah and the above great Saints to Fr. James Martin, SJ and (now) Archbishop Theodore McCarrick? Indeed, as I've written before, how can the 6th and 9th Commandments be validly neutered to make good and holy that which was once morally reprehensible, both by God and the Roman Catholic Church.
|Saint Michael the Archangel|
The short answer is that it cannot. Why? Because, on the one hand God Himself said so regarding homosexuality, and on the other, Our Lord said so on marriage. Those who say otherwise might well remember the battle cry of Saint Michael the Archangel to Lucifer: Quis ut Deus?
In other words, has the current Pope and his Sycophant Cardinals and Bishops made of themselves man-gods, capable of abrogating Divine law? Seemingly so...to me, anyway. But others more Theologically trained than myself will have to make that determination. I'm just going off of what the Creator and His Son have said. In the meantime, the Pope and his ilk - along with Holy Mother Church - remain in my prayers.
Oh how I long for the day when everything old in the Catholic Church becomes new again, especially the Tridentine Mass. And for that day that everything new - the Nous Ordo Mass and most of Vatican II and its novelties - gets thrown into the trash heap of known failures.
But what really tantalizes and excites my Catholic thought processes is the day that a fully Orthodox and Roman Catholic Pope is elected - and those same modernist Cardinals, Bishops and Priests who give no-questions-asked allegiance to the current Pope must give likewise to the next fully Orthodox and Roman Catholic one .
Please, God...let it be so.
